The Leader Letter

Wholehearted

Dear Leader,

This week was See You at the Pole, a global student-led initiative of prayer at local schools. I can recall being in middle school and high school joining in for SYATP. This year's theme was WHOLEHEARTED, based on Jeremiah 29:13.This word has been prominent of late, and a call to me personally. Several studies I have recently been involved in have directly addressed this idea of wholeheartedness. What does it mean to be wholehearted?

Our vision at Man in the Mirror is to see men reflect honestly, pursue God WHOLEHEARTEDLY, and live vibrantly. Of course, the greatest commandment is to love God with ALL of your HEART, mind, soul, and strength.

If I'm being honest, that's not always easy, and I don't always feel like my heart is wholly devoted. So what does it look like to have hearts that are completely committed in the midst of the daily grind, and over the course of a lifetime?

In Christ,

SPEAK TO THE HEART

Are you able to communicate in a compelling way to your men where you desire for them to go? Does it call to their hearts that are longing for adventure and purpose?

Vision is at the hub of the engine that propels your men and tells them where you're going. It gives them a "why" for everything they're doing.

Men will do a lot of things for a lot of reasons, but if we don't engage them in ways that move them, eventually they'll get tired, bored, and discouraged. Then their hearts will begin to grow cold, wither, and die.

We want to see men REFLECT HONESTLY, PURSUE GOD WHOLEHEARTEDLY, and LIVE VIBRANTLY!

 YOUR ACTION STEP:

Consider your manhood vision

Church attendance is on the decline with each passing generation. Those who have no religious preference are quickly increasing. Close friendships amongst men are waning and loneliness is the result. Fatherlessness is a compounding problem that leaves young men guessing at what it means to be a man.1

Whether they realize it or not, many men are desperate for a clear vision of manhood. As John Eldredge puts it, "Deep in his heart every man longs for a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue."

The church has long been guilty of obscuring these type of calls to the hearts of men behind programs and activities. We often keep men busy without providing them with a clear sense of purpose and vision. It is time to change that.

As you REFLECT on what it looks like to be a WHOLEHEARTED man, a man who lives VIBRANTLY, write it down. Draw it out. Share it with someone you trust. Allow it to guide your actions and decisions. Seek out resources that help you pursue the manhood that you envision.

There is a growing bastion of men who are fed up with lives of quiet desperation. Together, we can support and challenge one another to become the men God created us to be.
