Begin With the End in Mind

Dear Leader,

It does not matter to me whether a church utilizes our model for men's discipleship or something else...as long as it's an effective system. My desire is simply to see men be discipled. I have personally experienced the power of discipleship and seen its effects on the lives of other men. I also see far too many men languishing in their lives without a clear understanding of the gospel of Christ.

We desperately need churches that have an intentional plan to reach their men (and all their people) for Christ. These churches KNOW their men...where they're at on their spiritual journey and what the right next step looks like. There are plenty of on-ramps and pathways in these churches to engage men from wide to deep.

When it comes to a discipleship model, the ones that work are essentially the same. This is because they're based on what Jesus taught us. Through his words, through his actions, and through the example of his life and ministry, we know how to make disciples. The language and imagery that is used may vary, but when it comes down to it we're helping people rely less and less on themselves and more and more on God through the knowledge and grace of his son.

Whatever the system in your church may look like, however complete or incomplete it may be, I'm here to help. I have been equipped through my training and experience to come alongside you for the purpose of making disciples: men who are transformed through Christ and are impacting their families, churches, communities, and the world!

In Christ,

A proven set of concepts and strategies to help you provide a discipleship pathway for every man in your church.

Learn the Model

There are several methods by which the No Man Left Behind model can be taught.

I am encouraging leadership teams to consider devoting 2024 to studying through the No Man Left Behind book.

One chapter a month allows your team to digest the concepts and strategies of the model while building camaraderie with one another.

If you don't yet have a team, consider gathering some discipleship-minded men and see where it takes you.

This is a method that respects time and process to build a strong foundation for long-term men's discipleship.

 YOUR ACTION STEP:

Begin with the end in mind

Several churches that I've connected with recently have expressed a sticking point in their ministry. That is, they don't have enough qualified men for the role of elder in their church.

At Man in the Mirror, we like to envision that moment of a man standing in front of his church with his family by his side. He is being ordained or installed as an elder, and you can see that his wife is proud of him. Looking on are several men who have had an impact on this man's life over the last several years, and men whom he has impacted as well.

When the pastor asks the man "How did God bring you to this point in your spiritual journey?" he responds "To be honest, I'm not really sure. The only decision I remember making is when my friend invited me to join the softball team six years ago. After that it seemed like every step I took was so...natural. When I was ready, the right next step just always appeared."

This is how a discipleship system for men in your church should work. It has built-in momentum and for the man, it is natural. But that doesn't come by accident or without intentional effort.

If we want men who are mature believers capable of the role of elder or any other leadership within the church, we must build them. We can't simply throw darts at the wall and draw targets around the darts. We have to know what we're building.

Can you define what a mature disciple looks like? Do you have a model that helps you create that kind of man?

To help us define a disciple, we use the concept of Head, Heart, and Hands. What does a man know, what does he believe, and what does he do? You can read more about that in the Man in the Mirror blog post linked below.

Always remember that it can take a long time to build disciples. However, if we know what we're aiming for, and we are intentional with working the right plan, we will find in time that the men we need are a natural product of the system we've designed.

Disciple Defined

"The discipleship system of your church is perfectly designed to produce the kind of men you have sitting in the pews."

Are You Reaching Men's Heads, Hearts, and Hands?

Ultimately, a man is not a mature disciple until the truth of the gospel is understood, believed, and lived out in his life. We use three key words to help us remember this concept: Head, Heart, Hands.
