No Real Transformation

Written by: Nate Flynn

Dear Leader,

It’s hard to ignore the turbulence in our nation right now—politically, culturally, and spiritually. It seems as though everywhere we look, there’s division, anxiety, and uncertainty. In times like these, we can be tempted to respond with more noise, to react with hatred, or even to retreat from confrontation.

As I observe our country and our churches, I keep coming back to a simple, profound statement from Patrick Morley: “No real transformation comes apart from the Word of God.”

At the same time, the book  Lead With Prayer is challenging me to cultivate a prayer-filled life. I am reminded that God’s Word and prayer aren’t just boxes to check as a Christian—they’re the foundation for real, lasting change.

Programs, events, and clever ideas have their place, but if we’re not rooted in Scripture and dependent on God in prayer, we’re missing the source of true transformation.

The times we’re living in are both challenging and ripe with opportunity. People are searching for hope and meaning. Men in our churches—and in our communities—need leaders who are alert, prepared, bold, and willing to engage in meaningful relationships.

This is our moment to step up, to lead with truth and grace, and to point others to the only source that can truly change hearts: Jesus, revealed through His Word and encountered in prayer.

Let’s be men who don’t just talk about transformation, but who experience it ourselves and invite others into it. My prayer is that we would be known as leaders who are anchored in Scripture, fueled by prayer, and ready to disciple men for such a time as this.

In Christ,

Insights from the model

No Substitute

Christian book studies, topical video series', and fellowship groups can provide value, but they are no substitute for bringing men into direct contact with the living Lord through His living Word and in prayer.

All men are affected by God's Word when they are exposed to it regularly. Consistency brings more understanding and greater desire.

We must also cultivate a culture of prayer. When we don't know what to do, it is the one thing we CAN do. Unfortunately, the more capable we become, the less we actually do pray.

If we’re not seeing transformation in our men or ministries, are we missing these foundations? And if a ministry grows without them, what is it really built on?

Targeting Transformation

Recently, I had the privilege of joining men from Northwoods Community Church in Peoria, IL at their annual Clay Shoot, along with men from Radiant Worship Center.

It was a beautiful day with a great group of men to take aim at some targets. After a full day of shooting and a delicious meal, I was able to target their hearts for transformation.

I challenged them to consider where they're at on their spiritual journey and take the next right step in joining Jesus on the adventure of changing the world.

Men's leader and former Man in the Mirror Area Director, Stan Risinger, has been diligently working to build the ministry to men at Northwoods. His vision is to grow mature believers who are living out God's mandate for their lives.

We want to see men who set their sights on full surrender to God. Men whose aim is to love the Lord with all of their heart, all of their soul, all of their mind, and all of their strength.

Men like that transform the world for good.

Action Steps 3.1

Your Action Step:

Walk the Walk

______________________________
In Leading With Prayer, the question is posed whether we just talk about prayer or actually pray. The authors share story after story of the POWERFUL impact that comes from people actually praying.

It’s one thing to “talk the talk,” but living out the Christian life—walking the walk—is where real transformation happens.

When it comes to Bible reading, research shows that opening your Bible once or twice a week barely moves the needle in a person’s life. But for those who engage with God’s Word four or more times a week, the impact is profound.

Struggles like loneliness, anger, bitterness, addiction, and spiritual stagnation all decrease significantly in this population. What's more, evangelism and disciple-making by this group were through the roof!

There are many factors that go into building a sustainable ministry to men. Leadership, vision, culture, purpose, and intentionality are just a few.

While those are important, what I have seen firsthand in the churches I work with is this: when men are genuinely engaging with God’s Word and praying together, something shifts. There’s a growing hunger for God and a contagious desire to share Him with others.

The phrase "We want others to have what we have" echoed throughout a group of men who are experiencing this shift, thanks to a leader who is modeling it for them.

This month's challenge is to Walk the Walk.
Don’t settle for talking about prayer or Bible reading—lead by example. Make it your aim to engage with Scripture and pray consistently, and invite the men you lead to do the same. When we walk the walk, discipleship becomes the norm, not the exception.

HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE EFFECTIVELY: TIPS FOR MEN

The journey to living out biblical manhood wouldn’t work very well if we never checked the map. And yet, that’s what some of us do, neglecting Bible study day after day with promises to get around to it when we’re less busy (all while secretly feeling that we already...
